" Research interests and expertise

Statistical methodology in ecology and environmental science, particularly for multivariate community data sets and biodiversity studies
He has published about 75 refereed papers in SCI-listed journals, a few of the more highly cited of which are listed below, given many invited lectures to international conferences in statistics (International Biometric Society, International Environmetrics Society, Sydney International Statistics Congress, Royal Statistical Society) and environmental science (SETAC, Washington; MacMillan Biodiversity Lecture, Vancouver etc), and led many academic and commercial training workshops on statistical analysis of environmental data, e.g. under the auspices of IOC, FAO and UNEP (including an extensive series in European countries under the Mediterranean Pollution Programme). Dr Clarke is responsible for the development of the PRIMER software package for statistical analysis of community data, now used by ecologists and environmental scientists worldwide, particularly in the marine sciences but increasingly in freshwater, terrestrial and palaeontological contexts.

" Current projects

UK and EC grant-funded work on new biodiversity estimators with robust properties, spatial structuring, impacts of demersal fishing on benthic community structure etc. Research funded through PRIMER-E on further development of multivariate statistical methods for future versions of PRIMER.
